Beggars Banquet #28, August-September '82
Brooklyn, New York: Beggars Banquet, 1982. Softcover. Eight [8] pp. Including covers. 8 1/2" x 11." Black, white and red covers. Features: The New Movie; Time is on Whose Side? Rare, very early issue of the legendary Rolling Stones fanzine that was first launched in September 1978 by sixteen [16] year old Bill German out of his Brooklyn home. These earliest issues were crudely typed out on a borrowed typewriter, sneakily photocopied at school and then sold for 25c each. Despite losing money on the venture, German's dedication slowly saw him breaking more significant Stones stories than the professional music press, thereby winning him 1,000 new subscribers in a relatively short period of time. The band were so impressed that in 1983 Beggars Banquet became the band's official newsletter and its circulation rocketed to 20,000. Despite his access to the ban and a solid subscriber base, by the early Nineties, German was increasingly disillusioned. Having dropped out of journalism college, he was earning a pittance from the fanzine. As a result, he closed the newsletter in January 1996. According to many, no book or documentary will ever cover this period in Stones history as thoroughly and accurately as these early issues, which covered events onstage, offstage, backstage, inside the studio or inside the Stones' homes and hotel rooms. Very Good with some light handling. Item #11072338
