The play featured a cast of classically trained African-American singers, a risk on Broadway where it was initially unpopular. Porgy and Bess played the Majestic Theatre in New York City, [opening on January 22nd, 1942 and running for 286 performances before going on the road. It wasn't until several years after Gershwin's untimely death at the age of 38 that the work received the acclamation it deserved. This Broadway revival starred Todd Duncan as Porgy, Etta Motenas Bess and Warren Coleman as Crown. Front pages with black and white photos of Gershwin and Heyward with biographies printed below.
