Long Beach: Frematic Homes, 1954. Softcover. Seventeen [17] plans are in Near Fine condition with some light creasing along edges. The remaining six [6] plans are stapled together and have prices written in pencil and ink. Rossmoor is a planned, census-designated place located in Orange County, California and was developed from 1955 through 1961 by Ross W. Cortese, who had earlier developed the architecturally-significant mid-century Lakewood Rancho Estates in Long Beach [1953] and the Frematic Homes [1954] in Anaheim, just north and west of Disneyland. Originally created as a nudist colony, this quickly changed when Cortese's original partners in securing the first large parcels of land that would become Rossmoor included California governor Goodwin Knight and Judge Alfred Gittelson, who had also partnered with Cortese in the Lakewood Rancho Estates and the Frematic homes.The Rossmoor community is easy to recognize because of its red brick "signature wall" that borders the entire unincorporated community, differentiating it from neighboring cities Los Alamitos and Seal Beach. After Rossmoor, Cortese would construct the first of his very successful Leisure World gated retirement community in that part of Seal Beach which is immediately south of Rossmoor. Rossmoor homes, originally offered at $10,000-$20,000 now sell for upwards of $2,000,000. Realtors in Orange County recently reported that the average price for an Orange County home had exceeded $1,000,000. These plans provide an interesting view into home design in one of the countless suburban communities that were built outside of major American cities in the exploding post World War II economy.
